What each layer does

  • Rain: The main fall of rain: a steady, even wash.
  • Window: Light taps on glass.
  • Roof: Low, dense drumming overhead.
  • Leaves: Soft drops on foliage.
  • Wind: Slow gusts that drift in and out.
  • Thunder: Distant, rolling thunder at random. Off in most presets.
  • Low hum: A deep room tone, like a moving carriage.

How it works

The browser makes a stream of random noise, then filters it into different kinds of rain: a wide wash for the main fall, and thousands of tiny randomly timed taps tuned to sound like glass, a roof or soft leaves. Because every drop is random, nothing repeats, so there is no loop for your ear to catch.

The rain sits in the bar at the bottom of the page, next to the music. It keeps playing as you move between pages, and it fades out together with the music when the sleep timer ends.

Use it well

Keep it quiet, start with the Deep Sleep Drizzle room, set a timer and put the speaker across the room. For more, read how to fall asleep to rain and how loud it should be.

Questions

About the rain mixer

Is the rain recorded?

Yes. Every layer is a real field recording, cut into a loop of roughly a minute with the end faded into the start so you do not hear a seam. Thunder is separate soft rolls played at random times. If a file cannot load, that layer switches to a generated imitation.

Does it use a lot of data?

A little. Each rain layer is a small MP3 (about 0.5 to 1.3 MB) that loads the first time you use it, about 5 MB for all seven, then your browser keeps it. The music streams as usual.

Will thunder wake me up?

Thunder is off in every preset except Storm Shelter, kept low, with the sharp crack filtered off. You control it with its own slider, or leave it at zero.

Does it save my mix?

Yes, in your own browser (local storage). Nothing is sent anywhere.

Will it work with my phone screen off?

Some mobile browsers pause web audio when the screen locks. The “Dim screen” button blacks out the page and asks the browser to keep the screen awake, so the sound keeps going. Browsers vary, so test it before you rely on it for the night.
