The short answer
Choose a thunder-free room, set the volume low, pick a 30 to 60 minute timer, dim the screen, put the phone down and breathe slowly with the rain. When your mind wanders, go back to the sound without judging yourself.
The routine
- Pick a room. Try Deep Sleep Drizzle first. It is the softest.
- Press “Play rain + lofi”. The music and the rain start together.
- Set the volume. Quiet. Lower the music slider before you lower the rain if the melody keeps you awake.
- Choose a timer. 30 minutes if you usually fall asleep fast, 60 or 90 if not. Everything fades out together.
- Dim the screen. Press the moon-and-screen button in the bar. The page goes black and the sound keeps playing.
- Breathe. In for four, out for six. Follow the rain as it comes and goes.
When your mind will not stop
Do not fight it. Notice the thought, then return to something small in the sound: the next tap on the glass, the low hum, the slow part of the melody. Doing this ten or twenty times is the exercise. If you are still awake after about twenty minutes, get up, do something quiet in dim light, and go back when you feel sleepy.
What if I wake up in the night?
If noise wakes you, a long timer or the 8 hour mix can help. If you wake with a start for no reason, try lowering the volume, or choose a room without thunder.
Safety notes
Keep the sound low and the speaker away from the bed, and do not put a sleep sound next to a baby’s cot. If sleep trouble goes on, talk to a doctor. This site is music and ambience, not medical advice.
Questions
Is rain good for sleeping?
For many people, yes. Steady rain is a broadband sound with no message in it, so it makes sudden noises (a door, a car) stand out less. Research on rain for sleep is thin, so treat it as a comfort that works for some people, not as a treatment. If you struggle to sleep for weeks, talk to a clinician.
How loud should rain sounds be for sleeping?
Quiet. Loud enough to blur the small noises that wake you, not loud enough to become the thing you listen to. If you could still have a quiet conversation over it, the level is about right. Put the speaker across the room, not on the pillow.
Should I leave rain sounds on all night?
If you mostly have trouble falling asleep, use the sleep timer (30 to 60 minutes) so everything fades out. If noise wakes you through the night, the 8 hour mix or a long timer makes sense. Keep the level low either way.
Will it work with my phone screen off?
Some mobile browsers pause web audio when the screen locks. The “Dim screen” button blacks out the page and asks the browser to keep the screen awake, so the sound keeps going. Browsers vary, so test it before you rely on it for the night.
