The short answer
Choose roof for the most noise cover, window if you like to hear individual drops, leaves for the softest feel, drizzle for light sleepers, storm if you love weather, and night train if a steady low hum helps you more than the drops do.
At a glance
| Rain | Sounds like | Best for | Room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window | Separate taps on glass over a wash | Cozy nights in, following the rhythm | Rain on the Window |
| Roof | Low, dense drumming overhead | Covering noise, deep sleep | Rain on the Roof |
| Leaves | Soft, breathy drops with a little wind | Winding down, meditation | Rain in the Forest |
| Storm | Heavy rain, wind, distant rolling thunder | People who find storms cozy | Storm Shelter |
| Night train | Rain over a low, moving hum | Insomnia, travelling, focus | Night Train in the Rain |
| Drizzle | A light, even, quiet wash | Light sleepers, falling asleep | Deep Sleep Drizzle |
How to choose
Think about what keeps you awake. Loud neighbours or traffic: roof or storm, for the most cover. A busy mind: window or night train, so you have something steady to follow. Sensitive to noise: drizzle or leaves. If thunder startles you, avoid the storm room entirely; every other room has none.
Make your own
None of this is fixed. In the rain mixer every layer has its own slider, so you can blend window and roof, add a little wind, and save the result in your browser for next time.
Questions
What is the best rain sound for sleep?
Start with a soft, steady rain with no thunder: the “Deep Sleep Drizzle” room. If you want more cover for noise, try rain on the roof. If you like to hear individual drops, try rain on the window.
Is this real rain or a recording?
It is real recorded rain: field recordings of rain, a window, a roof, leaves, wind, a train cabin and distant thunder, mixed live in your browser. The loops are cut and crossfaded so you do not hear a seam, and the thunder rolls arrive at random times. The music is original lofi by Purrple Cat.
Does the music play with the rain?
Yes. “Play rain + lofi” starts a playlist and its matching rain preset together, and you can balance the music and each rain layer separately in the mixer. You can also play the music only or the rain only.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no ads. The music is by Purrple Cat and licensed under CC BY 4.0, so you can stream it, download the MP3s and use it with credit.
