Please don’t

Not for music streaming services

Please don’t upload the music to Spotify, Apple Music or any other music streaming service. That includes remixes, samples and covers of it.

How to credit

Copy this into the description of your video, stream, podcast episode or post (the copy button above does it for you): Music by Purrple Cat or the full licence version Music by Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0: creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. If you cannot add text (a shop, an event), a small sign or a line in your “thanks” page is fine.

How the player and rain work

Press play on any room, mix or track and the player at the bottom takes over. It keeps playing while you click around, so you can read the guides without the music stopping. The rain button opens the rain presets and volumes; the moon button sets the sleep timer (15 minutes to 8 hours, or after the current song) and fades the music and the rain out together; the screen button dims the page to a dark, slow rain-on-glass picture (with a small “now playing” label) and asks the browser to keep the screen awake; tap or press any key to wake it. Space plays or pauses. Each track has an MP3 button for a free download, and each playlist has an M3U8 file for VLC and other players.

About the rain

The rain is real. Seven recordings (rain, window, roof, leaves, wind, a low train rumble and distant thunder) are mixed live in your browser, each looped without a seam, and the thunder plays as random rolls. If one fails to load, that layer is replaced by a generated imitation. Nothing is uploaded, and your mix is remembered in your own browser only.

Sound credits

The rain sounds on this site are recordings by other people, used under their licences:

  • Leaves: “Rain on leaves” and wind: “Wind in forest” by Gravity Sound, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
  • Thunder: “Thunder / Lightning Ambience, Field Recording” by Gregor Quendel, CC BY 4.0, via OpenGameArt (cut into separate rolls, with fades).
  • Rain: “Rain (loopable)” by Ylmir (CC0). Window: “Rain against the window” by cori (public domain). Roof: “Rain in the Gutter Loop” by Ogrebane (CC0). Low hum: “Taiwan railways EP727 train cars sounds” by Jidanni (CC0), filtered to the low rumble.

The rain sounds were cut, looped, levelled and compressed to MP3 for this site. The CC0 and public domain recordings need no credit, and they are listed here to thank the people who made them. These sound credits are separate from the music, which is by Purrple Cat.

About the music

Purrple Cat is an independent lofi project that has been making instrumental music since 2018, with 500+ songs. This site collects the slow, sleepy, rainy ones from the records released from 2020 onward into six rooms. It is not a streaming service: it is a free collection to listen to and to use.

Not medical advice

Rain and music can help some people relax and sleep, but they are not a treatment. If you have long-standing trouble sleeping, please talk to a doctor.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is rain good for sleeping?

For many people, yes. Steady rain is a broadband sound with no message in it, so it makes sudden noises (a door, a car) stand out less. Research on rain for sleep is thin, so treat it as a comfort that works for some people, not as a treatment. If you struggle to sleep for weeks, talk to a clinician.

What is the best rain sound for sleep?

Start with a soft, steady rain with no thunder: the “Deep Sleep Drizzle” room. If you want more cover for noise, try rain on the roof. If you like to hear individual drops, try rain on the window.

How loud should rain sounds be for sleeping?

Quiet. Loud enough to blur the small noises that wake you, not loud enough to become the thing you listen to. If you could still have a quiet conversation over it, the level is about right. Put the speaker across the room, not on the pillow.

Should I leave rain sounds on all night?

If you mostly have trouble falling asleep, use the sleep timer (30 to 60 minutes) so everything fades out. If noise wakes you through the night, the 8 hour mix or a long timer makes sense. Keep the level low either way.

Is this real rain or a recording?

It is real recorded rain: field recordings of rain, a window, a roof, leaves, wind, a train cabin and distant thunder, mixed live in your browser. The loops are cut and crossfaded so you do not hear a seam, and the thunder rolls arrive at random times. The music is original lofi by Purrple Cat.

Does the music play with the rain?

Yes. “Play rain + lofi” starts a playlist and its matching rain preset together, and you can balance the music and each rain layer separately in the mixer. You can also play the music only or the rain only.

Will it keep playing when I change page?

Yes. The player and the rain live in the bar at the bottom and keep going while you move around the site.

Will it work with my phone screen off?

Some mobile browsers pause web audio when the screen locks. The “Dim screen” button blacks out the page and asks the browser to keep the screen awake, so the sound keeps going. Browsers vary, so test it before you rely on it for the night.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no ads. The music is by Purrple Cat and licensed under CC BY 4.0, so you can stream it, download the MP3s and use it with credit.

Can I use the music in my videos and livestreams?

Yes, with credit: “Music by Purrple Cat”. Social media, YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, podcasts, cafés and shops are all fine. The music is not in Content ID, so you will not get claims.

Can I upload the music to Spotify or Apple Music?

No. Please do not upload this music to music streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, Tidal and similar), and no remixes, samples or covers of it there either.

Who makes the music?

Purrple Cat, an independent lofi project since 2018 with 500+ songs. Every track here is an original instrumental.
